Counselling For Young People

Working at Bradford University Counselling services my role took me to working with young adults from Bradford University and nearby Bradford College. I now provide private counselling, psychotherapy and coaching for young people  from year 7 upwards to University and Emerging/ Transitioning Adults.

Young people have many issues affecting them depending where they are in their lives. Counselling for teens will involve different issues compared to counselling for a year 7 or a young person just having left home for University.  It is important to recognise each young person as a unique individual. It is easy for adults to get swept away with stereotypes such as "all teenagers are moody". It is my job to view each young person as a unique individual and work with them to help understand themselves better.

Parents splitting up, starting a new school, living with a blended family, preparing for, taking exams, waiting for exam results, G.S.C.E or A levels can be a pretty daunting, gut wrenching time. Leaving school, moving to University or not, making life choices let alone trying to work out who you are and accepting the responsibility of becoming an adult can add confusion or cause breakdown in communication.

As well as an exciting time -  in many young people's lives it can also be tainted with internal and external pressures which can bring about anxiety, depression, poor relationships, anger and breakdown in communication. Whether  it be with themselves, family, friendship groups or environmental factors such as alcohol, drugs, social media - it can be a confusing time for young people.

Yasmin Shaheen BACP Counsellor & Psychotherapist

I am very interested in the types of relationships we have and how they affect our lives. We can't get away from relationships. Whether for a young person it be a relationship with their Xbox, Snapchat, parents, siblings or school dinners. These unique relationships are important to each individual differently and affect us in many ways.

I am passionate about helping young people improve the relationships in their lives. This helps them grow by increasing their self awareness through helping them understand themselves better. I believe relationship with "our self" holds the key to many issues. Crack this relationship and all else follows -  increased confidence, self-belief & empowerment. As a result other relationships get easier. Life gets easier and way more fun. How awesome is that?
